MARIA WHEELER

Bsc (hons) MCOptom Higher Cert Paeds Eye Care DipSV MBABO

I was born and raised in Bournemouth, and from a young age I knew I wanted to become an optometrist. Having worn glasses since I was 10 years old and contact lenses as a teenager, I experienced first-hand the difference good vision can make to everyday life. That early experience inspired me to help others see the world more clearly.

I graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Optometry from Cardiff University in 2007 and have been a registered optometrist since 2009. Over the past 17 years I have worked in both high street and independent practice, gaining extensive experience in children's eye care, ocular pathology, low vision and behavioural optometry.

Today, my practice is dedicated almost exclusively to children. In 2025 I was awarded the Higher Certificate in Paediatric Optometry by the College of Optometrists, recognising my commitment to developing specialist knowledge in children's vision. I have a particular interest in understanding how vision influences learning, development and confidence, and I enjoy helping families uncover visual factors that may be affecting a child's progress at school or in everyday life.

.Every child is different, so I adapt my approach to suit their individual personality, communication style and needs, creating a relaxed and positive experience for both children and their parents. I regularly work with children of all abilities, including those with autism, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy, and I believe every child deserves an eye examination that is thorough, accessible and enjoyable.

I am passionate about continuing to learn. One of the things I love most about optometry is that we're always learning more about how the visual system develops and functions. That curiosity is what keeps me passionate about my profession and committed to continually improving the care I provide and I regularly undertake further professional development to ensure the care I provide reflects current evidence and best practice.

When I'm not in clinic, you'll usually find me spending time with my family or enjoying life on the beautiful Dorset coast.
